One interesting and useful bit of advice I received from a veteran teacher:
Keep your lesson simple on the day before or the day of return from a holiday (or long weekend). Students are not "with it" at either time and it doesn't do much but cause you headaches and grief if you introduce new material or attempt to administer difficult lessons at this time.
